Choral Society has two "seasons" of rehearsals per year, culminating in two Spring Concerts in early May and two Christmas Concerts in early December. All rehearsals, unless otherwise noted, are held in the Choir Room at Aldersgate Methodist Church from 6:30-8:30 pm on Tuesday nights during the spring and fall. Check when rehearsals begin next.
To join Choral Society, just come to one of the first 3 rehearsals of the current season, and pay dues ($30.00 for adults, $20.00 for students). If you want to observe a rehearsal before paying dues, that is perfectly fine as well! (Dues money goes largely to music and rehearsal space rental.)
The Cleveland County Choral Society was originally organized in the fall of 1979 under the name "The Genesis Choral Society of Cleveland County." But despite its name change in 1980, its goal has always been the same: to bring together local singers of all abilities and ages to create beautiful choral music. As a non-profit musical organization, it is both a product of and supported by Cleveland County residents; contributions from its members and the community keep CCCS alive to bring a musical mixture of both sacred and secular songs to its audience.
CCCS' numbers and memberships have varied over the years, with choirs ranging in size from 33 members to 108--and every voice is welcome. The Choral Society, from its founding to the present day, has never required auditions for any singer; only a love for making choral music is necessary.
Throughout its history, the Choral Society has also been lucky enough to have excellent choral leaders. Beginning with Eddie Rackley, who founded the organization in 1979, CCCS has been directed by Janice Hudson Janiec, Elizabeth C. Minus, Clyde Buckner, Mike McGee, and our current director Kenneth Brooks, who has been directing the Choral Society since 2001.
Kenneth Brooks stepped up to lead the Choral Society in 2001, in tandem with his award-winning 31-year career as choral director at Crest High School. Now retired from public school choral music education, Mr. Brooks continues to select well-varied programs of music appealing to both classical and popular tastes. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Gardner-Webb University, a Master of Arts in Education from Appalachian State University, and a School Administration and Supervision Certification from UNC-Charlotte.
Susan Canipe has provided the Choral Society with exemplary piano accompaniment since 2001. A native of Cleveland County, Mrs. Canipe attended UNC-Charlotte and Isothermal Community College. In addition to her work in Choral Society, she served both the choirs of Crest High School and Crest Middle School as accompanist for over 20 years. She has also served in various area churches as Minister of Music over the last three decades.
